Incarceration significantly and directly effects every person.
The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world. The U.S. also has one of the highest recidivism rates, which directly correlates to excessive and/or unjust sentencing coupled with lack of rehabilitative measures. Rehabilitation has been proven to be more effective than incarceration and has been shown to reduce recidivism. Instead of the goal being to have men return to our communities with a less likelihood of engaging in criminal activity, the current mass incarceration trend directly leads to our communities having a greater chance of having criminal activity occur.
Incarceration is costly. In every state, more taxpayer money goes towards the Department of Corrections and city and county jails than most other agencies. Most states spend more per day per inmate than they do per student in public schools.
This means millions and millions of dollars that could be used to enhance other areas of our communities are spent to incarcerate men, leading to an increased likelihood of criminal activity to occur, as opposed to choosing the less costly, proven method of rehabilitation. IT MAKES NO SENSE!
Additionally, the inhumane conditions of the majority of facilities housing incarcerated men is unimaginable, heart-breaking and illegal. Not being fed, not having access to clean clothing or the opportunity to bathe, not receiving medication, no access to medical treatment, unsanitary conditions, working long hours in dangerous conditions for no or little pay and staff promotion of violence and sexual assault are all too common among U.S. facilities housing incarcerated men. This directly conflicts with the majority of people's views on humanity, morality and religious views on what acceptable treatment of people entails. Despite the confliction, this cruel treatment of people has persisted for years.
Incarceration is impacting us all directly and indirectly. Each of its effects has an extremely negative impact. Please let us know if you would like to get involved with measures aimed to correct this, and we can guide you in the right direction.
Despite fathers accounting for over 95% of incarcerated parents, not enough effort has been made to ensure these men can still parent effectively. This leads men to feeling powerless, hopeless and disengaged as parents.
Post Incarceration Syndrome, a recognized subgroup of PTSD caused by factors listed in the previous section, leads to depression, anxiety, delusions, increased agitation and irritability, directly inhibiting positive parenting.
Only approximately 11% of incarcerated fathers receive programming promoting parenting and communication, despite the data determining it leads to increased and improved communication between the child and father. The programs in existence do not offer actual remedies to addressing parenting WHILE incarcerated leaving children and fathers with a large gap in their relationship.
Incarcerated men who stay involved and engaged with their children have lower recidivism rates.
Approximately 2.6 million children currently have incarcerated fathers.
Research has found connections between children of incarcerated parents and increased behavioral problems, mental and emotional health problems and grade retention. It has also been linked to poor mental and physical health lasting well into adulthood.
Studies suggest the following factors can mitigate the effects of parental incarceration:
Fatherlessness has been identified as a U.S. epidemic due to the negative effects it has on children and the communities. Ensuring children of incarcerated fathers do not become fatherless is crucial.
DISCLAIMER*** Due to the nature of some crimes and other factors, it may be unhealthy to promote increased communication between a child and an incarcerated parent at all or without the guidance of a professional. It is VERY IMPORTANT that children's mental and emotional needs are cared for as recommended by professionals. If you are in doubt or unsure, seek a counselor with expertise working with children with incarcerated parents. Due to the number of children with parents that have been incarcerated, there are MANY counselors familiar with the needs of these children. It is more rare to find a counselor with no experience working with children with an incarcerated parent than vice versa.
